De-stress over distress
20 minutes each day. It becomes essential to quality of life, especially now…
Open the door to stillness
Picture a door opening to your personal world of stillness, where there are no demands, no alarms, no sounds at all. This state of being is the perfect stillness of your true self.
This inner world is far beyond your life story, your achievements, failures, health, family role, or the compulsive thought train. It is an infinite sacred space you instinctively know exists but the fast pace of life has distracted you to the point where you have forgotten it exists and have misplaced the key.
Meditation as Medicine owner, Siobhan O’Connell, is the founder and owner of Siobhan O’Connell Wellness. She is a physiotherapist with 44 years of experience. Siobhan has learned through helping people that sustainable healing is maximized when the person attends to both their (often neglected) inner landscape as well as their physical body. In her vital role as a meditation teacher, it’s Siobhan’s mission to lead you back to that lost door of your inner self. Your key awaits!

THE SCIENCE of MEDITATION
Pain Management

Anxiety and Stress Management
One of the most respected medical authorities in North America, the Mayo Clinic asserts that “meditation can wipe away the day's stress, bringing with it inner peace. See how you can easily learn to practice meditation whenever you need it most. If stress has you anxious, tense and worried, consider trying meditation. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can restore your calm and inner peace…”

Treating Depression
“Transcendental meditation can treat depression.” Those with depression reported that their symptoms had nearly halved within three months of starting the treatment, and the effects were maintained across the rest of the year-long study.
“These results are encouraging and provide support for testing the efficacy of transcendental meditation … in the treatment of clinical depression,” said Hector Myers, the co-author of one of the studies and professor and director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

Sleep Management
If you or your partner are suffering from sleeplessness meditation has been credited with helping people get the sleep they need.
Sleep expert Rachel Morehouse is a psychiatry professor at Dalhousie University who spearheaded a survey of 1,500+ Canadians about their sleep habits. The results indicate that a high number of Canadians are sleep deprived.

Overcoming Addiction
At the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in Minneapolis, one of the top addictions centers in North America, meditation is an important factor for those recovering from addictions. In their sometimes month(s)-long programs clients are taught to meditate to promote a sense of inner stillness. Being taught to access the quiet place that exists in each of us allows us to renew our spirits again and again.
In new studies it is beginning to be apparent that meditation is an excellent tool for rewiring the brain.

Heart Health
Dr. John Denninger, director of research at the Harvard-affiliated Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital is quoted:
"Not only can meditation improve how your heart functions, but a regular practice can enhance your outlook on life and motivate you to maintain many heart-healthy behaviors, like following a proper diet, getting adequate sleep, and keeping up regular exercise."

“I have so much to accomplish today, that I must meditate for two hours instead of one.”
— Mahatma Gandhi
Stress and Meditation
“Modern medicine, for all its advances, knows less than 10 percent of what your body knows instinctively… The highest levels of performance come to people who are centered, intuitive, creative, and reflective – people who know to see a problem as an opportunity.
— Deepak Chopra
Keep your stress levels down with meditation. “Stress can certainly hurt your immune system,” says Morgan Katz, an assistant professor of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University. “Do not panic, try to minimize stress.”
— Morgan Katz, John Hopkins University
